The City of Calais administers a General Assistance program for the support of the poor. Pursuant to Title 22 MRSA ss4305, the Municipal Officers have adopted an ordinance establishing this program. A copy of this ordinance is available for public inspection at the Office of the City Clerk or can be found here. Also available for inspection is a copy of the State’s General Assistance Statutes, as copies of the State law are made available to the Municipality by the Maine Department of Health and Human Services.
Persons who wish to apply for General Assistance may do so at the Calais City Building during the following times:
Monday (or Tuesdays when Monday is a Holiday)
9:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. or 12:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

In an emergency, applications will be taken at other times by appointment only. Or you can contact the Calais Police Department at 454-2752 or the non-emergency dispatch at 1-800-432-7303.
The General Assistance administrator must issue a written decision regarding eligibility to all applicants within 24 hours of receiving a completed application.
