The Calais Water Department is working to address iron taste and odor issues in areas of the system. During hot summers, the groundwater temperature increases which makes the iron more difficult to remove at the filter plant. Additional iron from unlined cast iron water mains may also contribute to what some customers are experiencing. The Water Department continues to adjust the processes at the filter plant to better remove the iron in the raw water. As cooler weather approaches, the expectation is that filters will perform better along with the changes we are making. The City is in compliance with all Maine and federal drinking water standards. Though some customers may notice an iron taste or odor, your water is safe to drink. We drink this water too!
We appreciate your patience while we continue to adjust the treatment to provide you with safe and tasty water. We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused.
Sincerely,
Marc Barnard
Water Department Superintendent
