Vehicle Registration

When registering your vehicle in Maine, the first step is the payment of excise tax to your local community. If you are a resident of Calais, you will make that payment at the City Building. For new vehicles purchased from a dealer, we require the original window sticker for calculation of the excise tax. Also please bring your blue title application and sales invoice showing you have paid Maine sales tax. For a used vehicle, please bring in title, bill of sale or other document showing the complete vehicle identification number. Once excise tax is paid, you will finish the registration process at any Bureau of Motor Vehicle branch.

When re-registering your vehicle, please bring your prior year registration if possible. Although not required, it can speed up the process. The City of Calais now offers the ability to fully register your vehicle without having to go anywhere else. This applies to most re-registrations and some instances when registering a new or used vehicle for the first time. To fully process your registration we also require you show current proof of insurance on the vehicle being registered. The fee for this service is $3.00 per registration. For additional details or questions regarding vehicle registration, please contact us during normal business hours.
